Alternative Names for Electrical Products

The distribution of electricity in industrial and commercial facilities began to take shape over 140 years ago. Since then, conduit and fittings have been specifically designed to meet the needs of the electrical industry resulting in modern conduit systems and raceways.

As the electrical industry has expanded, conduit, strut, and fittings have acquired various “slang” terms and nicknames due to factors such as their appearance, regional and cultural influences, technical jargon used by professionals, brand names, marketing efforts, and their specific applications.

For example, a ‘Cowboy Clip’ is one of the many names for a conduit hanger because of its bowlegged appearance, much like the iconic drawings depicting cowboys from the 19th century. Elbows can be referred to as 90°s because they are bent at a 90° radius. Hubs are often referred to as Myers® or Myers Hubs® based on the original inventor of the product in 1950, John W. Myers.

With the large variety of product names, it can be confusing to identify the specific part a customer is requesting. To help, we have compiled a list of common alternative names for conduit, strut, and fittings below.
